March 19, 2020
Dear Excel Church:
Many of us have been listening and watching the news on COVID-19, often at the edge of our seats as it seems to change minute by minute. As you probably know, the CDC has now recommended that we should avoid gatherings of more than ten people, and Governor Ige has directed that we “suspend services and activities in places of worship.”
Therefore, in light of the recommendations of the CDC and Governor Ige, we will be suspending our Sunday morning gatherings for the next two Sundays, but will be switching our services to online viewing, complete with worship!
I feel that this is the best way to honor our seniors and those with health challenges, who are the most susceptible to the coronavirus, and to honor those whom God has placed in authority over us (Romans 13:1-2). Our service will continue to start promptly at 9:00 a.m. The current plan is to suspend service for the next two Sundays (March 22 & 29), and we will reevaluate what to do once we hear further instructions from our State and national government.
I know for some this may seem like a reason to feel down, but I truly believe that this is not a “setback” that should cause us to become discouraged, but a “set up” by the Lord that we should rejoice in. I am truly excited about the times we are living in. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not excited about sickness and economic uncertainty that has resulted because of COVID-19, but I am excited about the opportunity that the church has to “Arise and Shine!”
I believe in the next few weeks we will have a chance to be used by God like never before! God is opening the door for us to be a light that shines in the darkness for people who are lost and filled with fear. The prophet Isaiah writes:
“Arise, shine; for your light has come,
And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
“For behold, darkness will cover the earth
And deep darkness the peoples;
But the Lord will rise upon you
And His glory will appear upon you.
“Nations will come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.
God is calling us to rise up! God is calling us to shine! God is calling us to let people know about the hope (Jesus Christ) that resides in you. 1 Peter 3:15-16 says “And if anyone asks about the hope living within you, always be ready to explain your faith with gentleness and respect.”
I challenge every one of you to join me this Sunday morning online as we Livestream our service. I will be sharing about new updates about our service and care as well as “God’s plan for you during the Coronavirus pandemic.”
